Abstract

This article deals with the vocabulary of the Modern Armenian language, the roots and lexical components of which are not explained by modern linguistic thinking. Words of this kind are Ancient Armenian formations, which were inherited into the Modern Armenian language along with the Ancient Armenian vocabulary. In this article, we took the original meanings of Ancient Armenian raroots as a starting point, applying the diachronic principle of interpretation of vocabulary.

The observed Ancient Armenian roots in Modern Armenian have independent and dependent functions.

  1. a) independent roots - Some Ancient Armenian roots have an independent function in modern Armenian, which at the same time act as generative bases at the lexical level. Among them are: բան, գահ, երկիր, խնդիր, խաղ, հասարակ, նահատակ, նշան, պատարագ
  2. b) dependent roots and stems- In modern Armenian, some roots, which are Ancient Armenian heritage and are interpreted with original, Ancient Armenian meanings, are characterized by a dependent function: they do not have verbal independence. Among them are - ասպ-, աշխար-, բեկ-, բաժ-, - գար-, գուճ- (կճ-), դուլ, խայտ-, կապույտ-, -հեղձ, -հեն, թով-, ելոյզ

The meanings of the observed roots (lexical components) in Modern Armenian can only be explained by the Ancient Armenian meanings from a diachronic point of view.
