Abstract

The literary legacy of prominent 20th-century realist writer Nar-Dos (Mikael Zakari Hovhannisyan, 1867–1933) is of interest not only from a literary but also a linguistic  perspective. Nar-Dos’s novels are rich in semantic and lexical neologisms, contemporary  borrowings for his time, newly coined and borrowed terms, which, through high linguistic  artistry, vividly depict the unique and lifelike traits of Nar-Dosian characters. To reflect the  historical period in the novel, city life, people’s interests, philosophy, worldview, education,  and characters, new linguistic means and vocabulary were essential. Therefore, along withthe new literary trend of realism, it was necessary to enrich and update the vocabulary of the language. Thus, the value of vocabulary is determined by the accurate selection and use of words, consideration of semantic nuances, and their functional-stylistic role.

In an effort to make his characters’ speech more expressive and vivid, the author draws on various layers of vocabulary. He uses dialectal and colloquial words, as well as borrowings from French, Greek, Latin, and Russian. Foreign words, archaisms, and neologisms also frequently appear, contributing to the unique style and richness of the language.
