THE TRANSLATION OF THE POEM "THE PRISONER OF CHILION" AS A PSYCHOLOGICAL REACTION TO THE EVENTS OF THE 19TH CENTURY

Abstract

  1. Tumanyan’s translation of J. Byron’s “The Prisoner of Chillon” is the only translation of the given work into Armenian up today. The purpose of the article is to reveal the motives and events that occurred more than 100 years ago that determined the choice of the poem for translation, which continue haunting the Armenian people today, once again confronting them with the tragic problem of survival.

A number of tasks have been put forward in order to achieve the goals of the article, which are the following: to study the theoretical literature concerning the art of translation, as well as the literary and critical reviews of J. Byron’s poem “The Prisoner of Chillon” and the translation of the given work by H. Tumanyan, to expose the socio-political motives for the choice of works for translation, on which the concepts of understanding the values of Tumanyan’s literary and creative process are based, to formulate an important message left to us by two geniuses Byron and Tumanyan.

The article concludes that even today, on the endless background of geopolitical contradictions, conflicts and violence of the 21st century, both the poem itself and its Armenian translation are convincing evidence of the high awareness of national dignity and the natural right to freedom of two great poets J. Byron and H. Tumanyan, as well as the statement of universal humanism and universal Christian love. Humanity must return to its original, immaculate appearance in order to be saved from the coming catastrophe and death.
